Jørgen Dretvik Explores the Depths of Nordic Folk and Psyche on Upcoming Album UnderVerden
This August, Norwegian artist Jørgen Dretvik invites listeners on a descent into the mythic and the personal with the release of his deeply conceptual new album, UnderVerden — meaning The Underworld.
Set to drop August 15 2025, UnderVerden is more than just an album. It’s a sonic journey through the forgotten, the hidden, and the repressed — a ritual of rediscovery through seven immersive tracks that bridge ancient Nordic folklore with contemporary themes of psychological and existential awakening.
The album blends raw Nordic folk traditions with alternative rock, brought to life through an evocative mix of rare and ancient instruments like the moraharpa, bandoneon, and organistrum, alongside electric bass, guitar, and drums. The result is a hypnotic, genre-defying soundscape that feels both timeless and urgent — something ancient and entirely new at once.
Lyrically, UnderVerden draws from ancestral spirituality, mythic archetypes, and personal upheaval. Sung in the Trøndersk dialect and interwoven with verses from the Elder Edda in Old Norse, Dretvik's lyrics echo like voices from long-lost worlds, challenging the listener to confront what lies buried in both history and the self.
"UnderVerden is a journey through the shadow valley – and an invitation to meet yourself in the dark. Only to emerge more whole, more wild, and more alive on the other side."
With nearly three decades in music, Jørgen Dretvik – rooted in Trøndelag, Norway – brings a background in punk, rock, and psychedelic balladry into alignment with Nordic mysticism and shamanic influences, all delivered with rare emotional presence.
